More opportunities for ITE grad to progress to Polys

MOE to let more ITE students enter polytechnics
By Pearl Forss, Channel NewsAsia Posted: 09 July 2009 1140 hrs

SINGAPORE: More students from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) will soon have a chance to progress to the polytechnics. Senior Minister of State for Education, S Iswaran, said the Education Ministry is looking to increase the numbers of students entering polytechnics to cater to the rising aspirations of students as well as industry demand for skilled workers. But he added the ministry is still working out the target numbers. Currently, one in five ITE students can progress to the polytechnics. Mr Iswaran said the ITE provides a strong foundation, and the polytechnics build on that training. Besides going to the polytechnics, ITE students also have an alternative route to getting a diploma. Since last year, ITE started offering niche diploma programmes. There are currently two programmes in the areas of machine technology and automotive engineering, and there are plans to increase this number, in areas such as culinary arts. - CNA/yt
